Beautiful, Haunting, Satisfying Read

By J. Meegan

I received this book via the Amazon Vine program. it is the no-frills, pre-published edition complete with typos and cheap binding. My understanding is that the final edition incorporates a map or 2 + some beautiful photos to accompany the story. I definitely may have used each however honestly, this book was thus sensible I did not very care.

McKinley has taken what may need been a rather boring, dry topic and turned it into one thing incredibly compelling. but the title of the book is misleading and my sense is probably the publisher wasn't very positive how best to categorize it. this is not simply a history of indigo...it's also a seamless series of travel essays, a memoir, a social, political, and cultural commentary, and lastly -- an unflinching homage to Africa and art. The writing is eloquent and poetic, the descriptions vivid...an excellent reminder of what sensible writing sounds like. McKinley is incredibly respectful of her subject material while not envisioning as stiff...she treats individuals and places with a quiet dignity and a mild sense of humor. and he or she does not flinch from depicting the cruel realities of life in Gold Coast Africa, particularly for ladies and kids.

I've never been to Africa...and, for the foremost half, I've never had a burning need to travel. however McKinley has sparked an interest in me, a need to check for myself a number of the items she delivered to life within the pages of her book. despite the fact that her primary focus was the Gold Coast areas (with a pretty glimpse into the Tuareg culture of North Africa) she did a superb job of giving me a way of the sheer enormity of the continent and therefore the seemingly wealthy, infinite sub-strata of languages and cultures that it holds. and therefore the clothes! As somebody who's wardrobe consists of black, white, and brown...I found the sheer selection, color, and detail of the West African women's clothing deeply fascinating and provoking.

As for indigo -- its definition takes on several shapes because the book progresses. it's merely a color, then a livelihood, then a political tool, then an art medium, then a link to the rapidly vanishing African past, then a euphemism always, death, and everything in-between. And McKinley's quest for indigo becomes a search for herself, for which means. The ending is extremely satisfying however with most left unsaid, it leaves the reader with the hope that this story is way from over. additional please!
